Tick Disease

Diseases vectored by ticks (CDC link information)

Bacterial

  • Anaplasmosis - caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum and found in the blacklegged tick Ixodes scapularis.
  • Lyme Disease - Lyme disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi and found in the blacklegged tick Ixodes scapularis.
  • Borrelia mayonii - Lyme disease caused by Borrelia mayonii and found in the blacklegged tick Ixodes scapularis(currently not found in NJ). Lyme disease in New Jersey is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi.
  • Borrelia miyamotoi - Closely related to TBRF, Borrelia miyamotoi is found in the blacklegged tick Ixodes scapularis.
  • Ehrlichiosis - Caused by several bacteria and transmitted primarily by the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum).
  • Tick-borne Relapsing Fever (TBRF) - Cused by Borrelia bacteria, transmitted by soft tick in the genus Ornithodoros. Currently not in NJ.
  • Tularemia - "Rabbit fever," caused by Francisella tularensis and transmitted by Dermacentor ticks, lone star ticks Amblyomma americanum as well as deer flies and the handling of infected skins/animals.

Protozoal

  • Babesiosis - caused by Babesia microti found in nymphal black-legged tick Ixodes scapularis.

Ricketsial

  • Spotted fever group rickettsioses - Several spotted fevers including Rocky Mountain spotted fever caused by different rickettsia and transmitted by American dog tick Dermacentor variabilis, brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus and other ticks.

Unknown Etiological Agent

Viral

  • Bourbon virus - a thogotovirus transmitted by unknown species of tick (currently not found in NJ).
  • Colorado Tick Fever - a coltivirus transmitted by Rocky Mountain wood tick Dermacentor andersoni (currently not found in NJ).
  • Heartland virus - A phlebovirus that can be transmitted by the lone star tick Amblyomma americanum as well as mosquitoes and sand flies. Not currently in NJ.
  • Powassan virus - A flavivirus transmitted by the blacklegged tick Ixodes scapularis and other Ixodes.
